Before that, the peculiar institution was common in most of the state from tobacco farms, fishing, and forestry on the Eastern shore to construction, stevedores, and iron monger if in Baltimore, to even quarries in Northern and Western Maryland. And of course, domestic labor throughout the state. Slave-owning Marylanders fought on the side of the Confederacy and Lincoln struggled to keep Maryland in the Union so that DC was not surrounded by the enemy. Frederick, MD actually cheered the arrival of Confederate troops.[/quote]
