I did a lot of research on vacuums about 6 months ago. Considered a Dyson and Miele, among others, and we also already have an Oreck. The Oreck is great, but not on wood floors; much better on carpet. We opted for the Miele -- I LOVE it. Hands down, best vacuum, and I was very skeptical that a vacuum could be as good as everyone said it was.
Funny, we also did a ton of research about 6 months ago. We have a Hoover upright and a Miele cannister. We loved the Miele, but one big problem we had was getting it serviced several years ago. Most places don't stock parts and it takes a while to order. We also had problems getting additional bags for the cannister, etc. The usual problems for imported products. Definitely was a pain. So, after doing a lot of research (including reading up on about 30 models reviewed by CR) we ended up with the LG Kompressor LUV250. And after 6 months of using it, it's fantastic. I also found it online for less than the local stores plus free S&H, so it saved me about 15% of the price on top of the fact that it is significantly less expensive than either the comparable Dyson or Miele options.
