Op, its a scam. When I had some hit me they asked to pay out of pocket. I got a few estimates, went with the cheapest, they went to the shop to pay, got the car fixed, done. I'd ask for proof your child did it and ask for pictures of the damage/cars involved and then tell them to talk to your insurance.
I did tell him point blank I am not paying without a written estimate and only paying reputable body shop of his choice directly. He called me basically dishonest. Among a few other words. I then said I want car fixed 100 percent Right and want proof fixed in case insurance wants proof. Last I heard he said pay up or your insurance goes up. He said cash or check only. No receipt. He added your cash check is proof enough. I felt bad at first. But after I left something felt funny. What stinks is I have an accident on my policy over this nonsense. I did call my insurance and “off the record” said don’t pay him. He can turn around and still file a claim. They also told me pay direct and make him agree to with draw the claim and say no accident. To remove accident he needs to withdraw. Honestly if he really wanted car fixed why not bring it I was going to pay. I am not 100 percent sure he will get paid my insurance months later. Even more so he admitted car was in an accident and in shop a few weeks after this accident. I am worried my insurance will deny. My car has zero damage. Literally not a mark. I am afraid this guy will start up again in a few weeks. He never gave address if he did I drive over to see if car in driveway.
