I would expect whoever hired the movers to pay.
I agree with this. If you didn’t discuss paying for the movers as part of the initial arrangements, I think you should pay, since the friend had no say in making the arrangements. I hope the friend tipped the movers generously.
Just saw the update. Since the friend arranged it with the movers, and since you told the friend to “hire” a mover, it’s on the friend to pay. I’m surprised that the moving company didn’t get a credit card or deposit from your friend when they arranged it.
+1 this is a weird story. Why would a moving company assume a client who referred them to a new client was going to pay it? Sorta think OP called the mover herself and is hiding the ball on that.
The mover is an acquaintance of ours. I am not hiding anything.
So ask your acquaintance why they didn’t collect a payment from their client. Absolutely bizarre to come with their hand out to you, if you truly simply gave your friend a referral.
The acquaintance came to our house to pick up the furniture and drove to the friend’s house. Acquaintance movers then told me that the friend said we would be paying for the bill, not them. Friend is not returning our phone call.
Sounds like friend is either really crappy or instead really confused. How much is the bill? How much do you like this friend? How much do you like the movers?
The friend is actually my brother in law. All other facts are the same. Movers will get paid. I didn’t want to make it a family thing. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that BIL didn’t pay the movers.
