if we’re being honest, no one “wants” a bunch of extra people standing around the room taking up space and (likely) judging. We do it because admin says we have to. As an early elementary teacher, it is really disruptive and someone always ends up feeling like they are the only kid without a parent there and ends up in tears. So, if you are an elementary parent and attending this my 2 pieces of advice are:
1. be prepared to work, i always do a big craft to keep parents busy
2. be prepared to look out for a kid other than your own. if you see a kid who doesn’t have a parent there, talk to them. ask them what they are doing. engage them and make them feel special. 
This event is pretty exclusive for parents who can’t take off a couple hours on a work day. If you have that luxury, be grateful and use a few minutes of your time to make other kids feel special too.[/quote]

Thanks for your honesty. I can see why some teachers aren’t fans of opening their classroom to parents if some students feel left out.

It’s sad though: my kids are in different clusters and I can see how well-run one is (it’s welcoming - for example, they announce things like this open house, teachers welcome parent engagement and classroom volunteers, teachers and admins proactively communicate with parents)

and how the other one is the opposite (didn’t announce this open house, standoffish and dishonest teachers who claim one thing but do another, they do not want parent classroom volunteers - surprise surprise , standoffish principal). Just so disappointed with the one school and can’t wait for my child to move out of there. There are huge quality differences within MCPS.
