If you have any remotely hard water its a total PITA. Descaling and filter changing makes it all not worth it. Also I question how good of a job those filters can do with slobber tainted water that is recirculated. Ew.

I have found using clear glass bowls filled all the way to the top attracts my cat that would love to drink out of every single faucet in the house.

This.  We had 2 water fountains over the years, PetSafe with the link posted below here by someone else and one of these fountain bowls (stainless steel).  They are a pain to clean and grow algae if not regularly completely disassembled and cleaned.  We use a regular human ceramic bowl or a stainless steel bowl and change water in the morning and before bed. So much easier to rinse a bowl and fill with filtered water.   FYI, we bought our first fountain for when we had to travel, and ended up not liking it for everyday when someone is present to change water bowls frequently.  It might be worth it using it only for travel as cleaning won't be as bad then.  We also noticed that cats would stop using the fountain the moment the water isn't pristine and fresh and something starts getting foul, way before humans notice it.   If you have a family/friend/cat sitter to check on your cat once a day when traveling the bowl is still much easier solution.[/quote]
