It’s so ignorant to act as if the district is super dangerous. Yes, homicides are up and the unfortunate truth is that many of the homicide victims are street-involved young men and are due to neighborhood beef. It’s horrific of course but if that doesn’t describe you, you are unlikely to be a victim of a violent crime. The district needs to be much more to prevent these beefs and violent crime- cracking down on illegal weapons, more violence interrupters, and stricter punishment. And we need to do more to prevent the circumstances that lead to becoming street involved in the first place- poverty, lack of educational opportunities, etc. It’s all connected. But lady from the suburbs who is wondering if it’s unsafe to walk around- it’s not.
Crime in DC is totally out of control. Youre essentially saying “but fortunately our kind won’t be affected.” That’s pretty racist if you think about it. Everyone has the right to live in a safe city, not just ladies from the suburbs as you say.
Dp. I don’t think the PP was saying at all that people don’t deserve to live in a safe place. Pointing out that DC is a different experience for suburbanites who come in for dinner once in a while, than it is for people engaged in gun and drug crime, is not racist. That’s just fact. Engaging in drugs and crime is dangerous, no matter what race you are. For what it’s worth, I was half a block away from one of these shootings, putting my kid to bed. In over ten years, these were the first gun shots I’ve actually heard and knew they were gunshots. Our house was literally rattling. I still do not believe I am going to be the target of a violent crime, precisely because these shootings are not targeting me.
