Look, we have the most heavily armed civilian population in the world. I have typed this here before, but there are different types of gun violence, and each one requires a different approach. Gun safety laws help with mass shooters and domestic violence incidents. They do NOT help with community violence, which this is. Almost all the community gun violence is conducted with illegal guns, so more gun laws don't help. You know what helps? 1) Police presence 2) Clear and swift consequences (prosecutors). Not overly punitive. Don't put a person with a gun away for 5 years. But put them away immediately for six months. That's also not happening with the residual court delays from COVID. 3) Preventive programs using street outreach, hospital navigators to deal with victim/perpetrators, job programs, etc. All three of those have to work together, in concert. Progressives like the preventive programs and that's awesome. They are not so keen on the first two, and that's part of why you have significantly elevated crime in many communities right now. The other piece is that when there is an officer-involved shooting, police legitimacy plummets. It used to have a temporary impact across the nation, and a sustained impact where the shooting occurred. Violent crime always rises. But now, all things are national, including this social impact of officer-involved shootings. An added factor here is whether local political leadership supports police. If it doesn't, violent crime continues at higher than normal levels. Politicians need to learn how to simultaneously publicly support police and help them get better/safer. It's really not rocket science.
