My uncle's physical therapist taught him this technique for going up stairs while carrying something. I am not a pt so I may be missing something as I type this out so jump in anyone if you know the Side Step approach. I agree that a dumbwaiter or an elevator (those pneumatic tube ones are cool!) - Have a thin long handled basket and put your item/s in that - Stand at the bottom of the stairs facing the handrail with your feet together and parallel to the first step - Place the basket on the 3rd or 4th step up (thin, long side parallel to the step) - Put your hands on the handrail, bend your knees slightly and step up with the foot closest to the stairs, then bring your second foot up next to it. Now you should be on the first step. - Move your hands up on the handrail, and repeat for the next step - When you get close to the basket, firmly hold onto the rail with the hand furthest away from the basket, use the hand closest to the basket to lift the basket and put on the next step or two steps up - Repeat until you reach the top of the stairs. Always lead with the high foot and always use the high hand to lift the basket while the low hand holds firmly onto the handrail. Hope this helps!
