Here's my Affordable Care Act: Require that all food grown, produced and sold in the US of A be completely free of artificial ingredients, including, but not limited to: preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, dough conditioners, artificial sweeteners, msg and ingredients, whether natural or not, containing msg. All junk food and processed food would disappear. Heart disease, diabetes, obesity, certain cancers would decrease significantly, lowering the demand for and cost of health care, cutting the cost of Medicare and Medicaid, and significantly reducing and perhaps eventually balancing the Federal budget.
So basically, you want us to go back to the 1800s and grow our own food? Because without preservatives and processing, the only food that could be sold would be fresh produce and meat. And it would have to be grown locally. So if you live in the DC area, you'll be competing with 6 million people for whatever they grow within a few hundred miles. Yeah, people won't die from heart disease. They'll starve.
Perhaps you weren't alive in the 1940s, before WWII, but my parents were. And back then, there were no preservatives, no MSG, no food coloring, etc. They ate a whole lot more than meat and vegetables. Flour, for example, does not require preservatives, neither does rice, nor most grains. Food can be canned and bottled without preservatives, and shipped just about anywhere. No one will starve, and there will be less obesity, heart disease, diabetes, the main drivers of health care costs and of the national debt (aside from wars, thank you GWB). My health care plan beats the Democratic and Republican plans.
Hmmm, the average life expectancy back then was 62 for most people. And only 53 for blacks. But if it's only money you care about...
