I don't see the appeal. The guy comes across as anti-business, is setting the county back with his policies and making it fall behind the likes of Fairfax, Howard and even PG in some metrics.
The weird thing is that he’s actually had some success in terms of job growth and investment. So maybe your perception doesn’t match the reality?
I'm just going off of what I hear. I've heard time and time again from people on this forum and in the media that Montgomery County has been passed up by Fairfax and is in danger of being passed up by Howard, the District and even PG Thanks to their unfriendly business environment.
Montgomery County got passed by Fairfax 20 years ago. That ship has long sailed and it has nothing to do with Elrich. Also, the County got passed by Howard County before Elrich was even elected. DC is a mixed bag. More high wage jobs but also higher poverty. There is a rotational cycle going on where DC is forcing poor residents out, mainly to PG County. Black residents to Capitol Heights and Latino residents to Adelphi/Hyattsville. Then Moco has been getting increased migration of poor residents from PG County. While PG County is growing and has some nice areas there is zero chance it could surpass Moco as a whole. However, the east county has seen significant rising poverty which is starting to spill over into mid-county areas. Again, this had nothing to do with Elrich. The conditions for this were a result of the financial crisis and Doug Duncan. The “unfriendly business environment” is not a problem exclusive to Elrich. Riemer has been a big proponent of things like regulating restaurant meals and creating green building energy requirements. It’s a cultural problem within the county government that goes quite deep.
