Gun control
Gun control has nothing to do with making MCPS safer. MCPS is doing nothing. Most parents wanted them to remove SRO's and police from the schools. They did.
How did the police do in Uvalde? Or Parkland? Don’t get me wrong, I support having SROs in schools. I just think it is ridiculous to think they’d stop school shootings.
Most school shootings are like the Magruder shooting. They aren't mass shootings. And having a police officer present is associated with a shooting more likely to be non-fatal. And most parents did NOT want SROs removed. A very vocal group of about 20 students wanted them removed. And Elrich took advantage of that and unilaterally removed them.
Is it true that there’s an association between school shootings with less serious outcomes and having police stationed at the school? Regardless, while I’m skeptical there’s any value to SROs with respect to school shootings, I support having SROs in schools. Removing SROs didn’t stop MCPS from calling the police into schools, sometimes for ridiculous things. I'd rather have someone specifically trained for that role respond to those calls than whoever is patrolling near the school.
