I agree you're looking for a fight, OP, with that title and premise. I hate barking. I have a very silent dog. But I understand, none better, that unless you're ready to put a electronic collar on a dog (and I'm not against them, they're great tools in the right hands), you can't really stop a dog who wants to bark.
Np You should be against them. There is no "right hands" It is cruel plain and simple. It is like saying using a belt on a child is ok "in the right hands" No it isn't. When trying to stop a behavior you need to look at the why it is occurring and get to the bottom of that. Some dogs do bark more but,if they are properly exercised mentally and physically and not left alone they probably won't bark.
I used to feel that way but am strongly considering one for my puppy. He is rarely alone, gets walks and socialization but training cuts barking back only a bit. He likes to bark like some kids like to sing. I think he enjoys the sound of his bark. He barks at everything and will not stop. He mainly barks in the house/yard and is usually ok on walks but not always.
