I have a child in Barnard PK-4 and plan to start DC#2 is PS-3 this fall. The principal, school counselor, and teachers are awesome. The facility is nice and renovated, with an outdoor field, basketball court, playgrounds, raised bed gardens, a gym, cafeteria for the older kids, art room, music room, library...it has a fresh and light feeling that it hard to describe. They have added a preschool Spanish teacher for one day a week classes, but it's not an immersion school. Many in the student body are coming from Title 1 and Spanish language homes, but not as many as at Powell. Petworth is changing, there is no question the gentrification train has arrived and there are more young college educated families making their homes there each year. The block where we live has comepletely turned over in the last 4 years. I would not judge the students by the color of their skin - it's a diverse area which to some people is a bonus. The aftercare is what it is - songs, coloring, some physical activity, playground time - not a lot of extras like you will find at some of the wealthier schools. You can talk to Sandra Montgomery about it during one of their weekly open houses on Thursday mornings. Agree that the middle school is not acceptable right now, although Barnard IS adding a 5th grade this year. If you are in any of the "lesser" feeder zones, though, this is a problem you are already familiar with.
