Do people actually see celebrities and go up and say hello?
I will go up to them if I’m interested in meeting them and they make eye contact or aren’t very obviously busy. In NYC I’ve met several celebrities this way- walking on the sidewalk, on set but not actively filming, outside a venue etc. i will not disturb celebrities who are dining or clearly in a rush/busy with young kids/wearing AirPods or on the phone and do not want to be disturbed.
Would you judge them if they respond badly or dismissively to you approaching them?
It depends on the situation and how bad the response is. Sting for example was sort of quietly a jerk when I met him waiting outside a spin class class before the studio opened- he was sitting around waiting in a public spot like the rest of us and could’ve just been nice about it. I don’t particularly judge him for it but if he has caused a scene, yes I would have. Fans are what a celebrity’s success is built off of, so sorry but it’s part of your biz and your brand. And on the flip side, I think more highly of celebrities who are gracious with being recognized.
Sting is generally known as an introvert and quite shy. It must be quite draining to deal with strangers in random situations. I can understand approaching celebrities who actively encourage and court fans but am not sure an artist, musician or actor who happens to be very good and successful at what they do should have to always be available to the public.
