Just hire someone to man the grill
Seems strange. Where would you find someone to hire to grill burgers and have it not seem weird if you have no other "help" at the party?
Recruit a family member -- hey Uncle Joe, can you man the grill at Logan's graduation party? Some people enjoy having something to do at a function like this, where they are an obligatory guest, but not exactly going to make hours of conversation with your DS' friends and family.
Absolutely do this. OR ask a friend. Or take the advice of the person who said to try a dry run/practice with just your family. Then you'll get an idea how to run things yourselves for future cookouts. You can do this without hiring someone. Totally honestly--I would find that super weird if you had some random hired guy doing your grill. Like, I would talk about it for days. And everyone I know absolutely hates the food truck at parties thing--there is always a line and people end up not eating at the same time and it really stops the flow of a party. People have been doing backyard cookouts for graduations for decades and decades. No one expects perfection. You can do it yourselves. Be fun. Err on the side of too much food and drink. Cooked burgers actually freeze great! And so do buns.
I agree with everything PP said. At our children's choir, the choral director always volunteers for grilling, because he's not that chatty. He's excellent with the choir, but not the small talk :-)
