At W&L, my teen just said that the first lunch is free, but not seconds anymore.
This is what my teens said as well. Second lunch is no longer free (or third and forth if you are my growing kid).
If your kid is really that hungry they should be taking food in. It’s not a free for all. You know they’re not really “free”. Someone has to pay for them.
Yes, my taxes pay for them. That's why my kid and any other hungry kid should get to eat the food. Remember this: anything the government is giving for free was paid for by your taxes. TAKE IT ALL! Free covid tests, free food, free mask...all of it! Take it! Don't be ashamed to go get yours. I volunteered in my son's cafeteria this year when they didn't have enough workers. Kids were allowed free first meal and free seconds. Even with allowing that, SO. MUCH. FOOD. was wasted. I learned that they don't really have a good way to account for the number of kids who would eat hot lunch each day. They just guestimated based on the meal. Example - pizza day, they cook all allotted for the meal that day. Turkey noodle day, they cook 1/2 of the allotment because they know even prepping that amount will lead to more than 50% waste. Kids will opt for yogurt meal or nut butter sandwich instead. Prepackaged items like yogurt, milk/juice, cheese sticks, cereal bowls, etc. get boxed up and donated to the local food pantry. Any prepared food gets trashed. I'm not sure what happened to the leftover allotments of food that weren't prepped for the day. Not sure if that food is donated since it wasn't cooked or if it's taken home by the workers. It was never made clear to me and the other volunteers. At my kid's school they couldn't get 2nds until everyone had their first meal. I thought that was a dumb rule because some kids were too embarrassed to come back for seconds. There were several times when a kid would ask if they could just have 2 burgers from the start and I hated telling them no because more than half of the time, they didn't come back to get seconds once the go-ahead was given. Very few kids actually did.
