OP here -- final update since we had the event for my mom's 80th birthday last night. It could not have gone better. Commonwealth Indian does have prix fixe menus you can choose from for an event, but we talked to the restaurant ahead of time about how many people we'd be and which dishes we wanted and everything was served family style with multiple dishes of each item on the table so we didn't need to do an inordinate amount of passing. Commonwealth is very generous with portions, so as we'd anticipated and tried unsuccessfully to avoid, we still came home with a truckload of food, but I'm very happy not to have to cook for a day or two! The private room is just inside the main entrance and seats 14 (16 would work with people at the head and foot of the table) banquet-style along long rectangular tables. The main restaurant itself is beautifully decorated -- much nicer and fancier than other Indian restaurants I've been to in the past. There's a swinging glass door to the private room so we did have privacy without feeling locked in. This was the first time my mom had been to a restaurant in two years but she felt very safe. The staff was fully masked the whole time. No idea what their vaccination status is but everyone in our party was fully vaccinated so it felt like a reasonable risk to take, especially given how well MoCo is doing right now. I think I mentioned this before but my last post is on the previous page -- there was a $250 room reservation charge. Service was added to the bill, which I didn't see as my husband took care of it, but I assume around 20-22%. We've only ever gotten takeout from Commonwealth before, so we hadn't ordered certain dishes previously -- but the mango spinach chaat and mango avocado salad made me so happy I could have just eaten those and gone home happy. I tried my kids' mango lassis and they were delicious -- not overly sweet. I didn't have a drink but the adults who ordered cocktails really enjoyed them (I saw Negronis and old-fashioneds). The service was wonderful and overall the restaurant was a pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend it to anyone in a similar situation.
