Like God is on their side, or just testing them. It's a way to insert God into the situation when it seems like no "higher power" would inflict such punishment on such a good person. It serves as proof that God is with them, at a time when he seems absent. It's not that there is no god or that god doesn't favor you, it's just that God has singled you out because he knows how strong you are. It puts a positive spin on a bad situation -- if you believe in God.[/quote]
