Glad that he's trying to reverse the class size increases that the SB approved in the last couple years and bring us back to something reasonable.
It's not going to last. They're able to do this because of the additional money available this year. A few more years when budgets tighten again, class size will be back on the table. People don't realize how much all the salary increases along with having to hire the necessary staff to ensure those small class sizes cost and will increase over the years.
Ok Debbie Downer, in absence of Duran personally being able to halt multifamily housing development or eliminate the burnout teachers have experienced over the last couple years.... what would you propose the budget look like?
I'm not opposed. I'm just pointing out to people that class sizes have gone up due to budget constraints, not because our previous or current superintendent wanted to increase class sizes - that class sizes are a reflection of budgets and not the superintendent; so don't start complaining about Duran if class sizes are increased again due to teacher shortages or increased enrollment or tighter future budgets. Arlington parents never want anything cut AND want teachers' pay to go up. Sometimes, something has to give. If not class sizes, then some programs or other "how can you even think of taking that away" items.
But if the outcomes of lower class sizes are favorable it creates more political will to keep them. People could lobby the county board for more money next year. If nothing else let’s take the smaller class sizes while we can!
Class sizes were increased the last two years despite opposition to it. APS doesn’t have the luxury to run a deficit and increasing class sizes is the easiest fix when budgets are tight. It’s a question of math rather than political will. Unless the county wants to commit more to APS.
