Curious how this is in your families. My MiL insists on sitting in the front next to her son (my husband). My husband sees nothing wrong with that.
Everyday stuff? They live near you and you see them frequently? Then it's silly for her to "insist" and silly for DH to cave. She should never turf you out if you're already in the seat and she's being picked up, for instance. They live farther away and DH doesn't see them a lot? Then giving her the front seat is a nice way to encourage him and her to chat to each other and catch up. Visiting time. In that case, it's a nice gesture on your part-- BUT she should not be doing any insisting or act as if it's a God-given right. I spent 25 years of visits to my DH's home country riding in the back seat of rental cars so MIL or FIL could ride in front with DH, who had to do all the driving there. It was fine. He only saw them once or twice a year at that point, so I wanted them to be able to chat during drives. Sometimes I'd ride up front especially if it was late in the day and MIL might need a nap on the drive home from an outing. But....also, MIL was not an "insisting," demanding person, which made it all the more pleasant to give up seats and time for her. I miss her when I read stuff like OP's post.
