The Founders realized that the power to tax is the power to destroy. They decided that the freedom of religion is so fundamental, and the risk to freedom of religion from being able to tax religions out of existance was so high that they decided not to tax religion. Similarly they thought the roles of the states was so important that states aren't subject to federal taxes.
Please point to the part of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, or any of the other Amendments that exempts religious organizations from any sort of tax. I'll wait. [Waiting . . . ] [Still waiting . . . ] OK, time's up. You can't find it because the Founders "decided" nothing of the sort. Tax exempt status for religions is not in the Constitution. A court made this determination, based on an interpretation of the Constitution, and now it's the law of the land. Just like the right to privacy, for example. Interesting how one of those decisions is always cast as the height of judicial activism, and a plague on this great land of ours, and the other is a bedrock of our freedom. So, let's make a deal. We won't worry about taxing religions, and in return you accept that the right to privacy exists, with all that entails. OK?
