If you have the money Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge offers cottages to nursing care as one example and there are many other continuing care options.  A second one with cottages to nursing is Collonades, a sunrise community.  If you want walking to Downtown you might find a smaller home in the downtown area.  Accessibility does not include food shopping for one in that area and not necessarily the safest place at night.

There is a beautiful new senior center ($24 million) with a very walkable neighborhood of homes of various kind close by including some one floor attached villas. UVA hospital is top notch and very cool community hospital, too.  Airport is extremely close with connecting flights out of DC, Charlotte and Chicago.  
Cultural options are there through UVA as well as sports, though not as sprinted as big southern powerhouse teams.  Beside The Center offering, there is a strong Ollie lifelong learning program.  There are hundreds of nonprofits looking for your help.   There is also one adult day program for those dealing with memory Etc. issues.  Also two area Farmers Markets in Downtown much if the year.  For social options there is a performing theater as well as UVA plays and musical offerings.  In Fall there is the Virginia Film Festival and in spring the Virginia Festival of the Book.  There is also an excellent para-transit service for those with special needs and the elderly who can’t drive which us door-to-door.

Probably one thing that could add a dimension would be safe biking trails and access to a beach. For those, you might also look over in the Kent Island area of MD right if the Bay Bridge.  There are some options going up there for seniors at least those who are active.

In our case we moved about a mile to a new home and really enjoy all the things I mentioned.  However, we are in retirement for three and can’t plan to use the option of a continuing care program as there are no really affordable options for a daughter who has a developmental disability, though still great programs for her, too, at least while we can drive.
