Ok, responding to myself.  Apparently what you want is an upholstered coffee table. I didn't realize that they still made these, they seem rather dated, but they do have them.

We had a consultation with a designer and she recommended quartz as stone is child friendly. I’ve had trouble finding one. The said to stay away from wood as we already have a lot of wood in that room. [/quote]

NP here.  We are in a similar position, with a lot of wood in the room.  Do you want child-friendly like a toddler won't need stiches if they trip and hit it, or child-friendly like easy to clean/won't get rings from drinking glasses?

Moreso that they can eat their breakfast there, wont' get rings, easy to clean. Our look is fairly transitional with a dark rug, light couches, and wood/brown leather accent chairs. [/quote]
