Certain sports -- e.g. sailing, fencing, skiing -- make all the difference in college admissions because they send a very clear "full pay" signal. Others -- e.g. football and basketball -- are needed in order to generate revenue for universities. Money quote = Collegiate athletics are a "giant multibillion dollar commercial entertainment platform functioning under the guise of a tax-exempt educational pursuit" Basically it's just an arms race. So long as everyone else is doing it, you can't not do it. [/quote]
