If your child is extremely upset around your mother, I will cut off contact altogether --your mom sounds toxic, so I wouldn't get into any deep discussions about her behavior. I have some dysfunctional family members as well-- trying to get them to self-reflect has always made things so much worse (defensiveness, playing the victim, fake/theatric overcompensation that will hurt your child's feelings even more...).
