What’s sad is that it doesn’t reflect reality. FCV should be higher than McLean
Why? Who does FCV play against that would warrant such a ranking?
Well if you believe in Youth Soccer Rankings then rankings are correct. At least it's a an objective number based on a well established ranking algorithm using common opponents. McLean hasn't really played any teams ranked above them either. We'll have some more data points after this weekend when FCV plays these teams in the GA California event FLORIDA UNITED GA [42] HOUSTON DYNAMO YOUTH DASH YSC GA [43] SOUTH SHORE SELECT ACADEMY [87]
Even by the provided list provided above and pasted below McLean plays 4 teams on the list compared to FCV's two: #25: MCLEAN #34: TSJ FCV #44: NC COURAGE* #60: BETHESDA #62: UKRANIANS** #72: LOUDOUN* #76: WILMINGTON HAMMERHEADS* #91: BALTIMORE CELTIC** #92: CHARLOTTE SA* * McLean opponents ** FCV opponents. Below is the average national rank of each team league opponents: 148 McLean 267 FCV FCV's strength of schedule is pathetic and they are still 9-1-2 in league games. McLean is 10-1
Who were the teams that beat/tied McLean and FCV?
FCV lost to Baltimore Armour, ranked 138th FCV tied: Sporting Delaware, ranked 508th Ukranian Nationals, ranked 62nd McLean lost to Loudoun, ranked 72nd
It might be surprising, but for the purposes of https://youthsoccerrankings.us, the rankings of your opponents does not matter! If a team performs better in a game than the algorithm predicts, it will help the team's ranking. Perform worse and it will hurt the ranking. So for FCV (ranked #35 with score of 36.28) vs Sporting Delaware (ranked #508 with score of 32.63), the ranking score says FCV should win by about 3.5 goals (36.28 - 32.63). If they win by 7 it will help the ranking. If they only win by 2 then FCV's ranking will drop. This is a well established way to rank things like chess and tennis players and sports teams. Especially useful when teams don't always play against each other in round robin format in the same league. I have personally found YSR's team scores to be a very good predictor of how competitive a game will be. If the team scores are within a point or two, most of the time the game is competitive. Of course, it's impossible to have a perfect predictor because the rosters can change a lot from season to season and a missing/injured player or two can make a huge difference. But this is a good, objective way to rank teams. It's just math. It's certainly better than a subjective opinion based on an anecdotal game here or there.
And this is why the point of "who do they play" was stated. FCV rarely plays anyone ranked above themselves and much of their competition is well below their rank. They literally have to fly to California just to play teams similarly ranked as themselves. How fun.
Why does it matter if opponents are ranked way below? As long as you are beating them by more than the expected amount then your ranking will be high. This isn't a thread on how GA is worse than ECNL. It's about rankings and whether they are transferable across GA and ECNL, which I'm saying they are even when teams play different levels of competition
What matters is having quality competition week in and week out. If just to maintain your ranking or to move up you need to win your league games by 4 goals or more then what are you doing? How do you know if your team is actually good or not? Even with going out to California your team will be the highest ranked team in your bracket. FCV 35th Florida United 43rd Houston Dynamo Dash 42nd South Shore Select 82nd You are flying across the country to still play teams ranked lower, and no offense, but FCV is "only" ranked 35th. You're supposed to be a "top team" yet you're not even a top 20 team Nationally and you aren't even playing a top 20 team after flying across the country to play in the Top level of your leagues Champions league Bracket. There are 19 or so GA teams in the top 100 nationally, five of which are ranked above you. Frankly, considering how shallow GA is to not even be a top 5 team within the league is sad. But hey, you can certainly beat up on PA Classics 352, Metro 434, and Skyline 429. Or you could also save yourself some money and play Herndon 343, Virginia Valor 367, FC Frederick 380, Oni Premier Magic 298.
Everything you just said is true and I agree. So what is your point? I was just pointing out how the rankings work and taking issue with those who question them because a team plays lower ranked teams. All of the teams in this area listed above, all ranked in the top 100, are only separated by just over 1 goal, so it's mostly splitting hairs over which is the "better" team. You seem to really want to argue about ECNL vs GA but I don't really care about leagues or why someone might choose one over the other.
There is no splitting hairs when most of your league competition is ranked 200-500. When you have to go to California to find a competitive game it’s a problem.
