Both my kids are in Advanced math, which frankly is just standard math. They both get good grades in math class. I put them in AoPS and realized how non advanced AAP/advanced math is in FCPS.
+1. But it's not even just about the FCPS AAP math not being advanced. They're not teaching it in a way that helps kids make any connections or solve any problems that deviate even slightly from the way they were taught to do things in school. Kids like that will still get 4s on their report cards and pass advanced on all elementary school SOLs, but they don't actually understand anything other than rote following of a process. I coached a math competition team. Both CML and MOEMS are very beginner, very basic math contests in which any kid who is smart at math should have a reasonable chance of solving many of the problems. Kids who are in theory gifted in math and receiving a true advanced math program should crush these problems without breaking a sweat. It was shocking to me how terrible all of these AAP kids were with any level of problem solving, other than the few kids taking AoPS or RSM.
