I'm trying to think of a reason for hospital admission that wouldn't also be appropriate for placement of an IV. Heart, lung, liver, stomach, neuro, infection, surgery, severe fracture - all seem IV appropriate (saline lock, not dripping line of fluids). In my general medicine unit, standard orders were for placement of an IV. Usually if you're admitted to the hospital there is a reasonable chance that you'll need an IV or that you should have one placed for the same reasons discussed above - emergency access. [/quote]
