When I was 18, I gave the finger and a honk (standard Jersey driving protocol, I thought) to a guy and his girlfriend when they cut me off with centimeters to spare while exiting a highway. The guy slammed on the brakes, turned his car perpendicular to block me and got out with a bat while his girlfriend laughed and threw cheetos. He was yelling "you gonna give me the finger you little c--t! I'll f--king kill you!" The driver behind me backed up (thank god) to give me room to get away. I floored it across a parking lot and onto another road. He chased me for a few miles trying to run me off the road (going over a bridge!) while my friend called 9-1-1. We got his plates but he raced off when a police car happened to pull on the road a few miles later. I still get heart palpitations thinking about it and can only imagine if he had a gun. All these years later, my friend is still impressed I kept my car on the road and we got away in one piece. I will definitely be telling my kids this story when they learn to drive. So....no, I don't give anyone the finger while driving no matter how bad I want to. Just not worth it!
This is what I was saying before. Often the finger givers are in the wrong because they are reacting to a glare or expression but they won’t ever admit they were wrong. A-hole drivers get more indignant when confronted with their bad driving and retaliate in some way by driving worse, giving the finger, or acting completely crazy like above. They aren’t going to learn their lesson so it’s just not worth it to engage.
