People generally work their way up from smaller colleges, or from jobs as an assistant to an assistant AD. It’s a lot like the movie business or politics & policy — there are a lot more people who want the jobs than there are positions, so you’ve got to be willing to take whatever low-paying job will get your foot in the door, no matter what your educational credentials are.
