I don't get people saying sock buns are "fake". I mean, I know the kind of bun people are talking about disliking (the super smooth slicked up hair with a HUGE bun, every hair in place, a billion bobby pins, super sprayed) and yes, that's a competition dance look for a 9 year old or whatever. But I used to do sock buns all the time when I was a new mom and they never looked like that. You don't need to use one of those big foam donuts (in fact I advise against it) -- you can literally use a sock with the toe cut out and rolled up. You don't want something massive in there, just something to roll the hair around. Then minimal bobby pins, just enough to secure it in place (four is about right for me, as I don't have super think hair). I think it looks best on second or third day hair and a little texture is good -- not frizz but just kind of "dirty hair" texture so it doesn't look too perfect. Depending on your head shape it can look good at the nape of the neck, though this doesn't work for me. I look best with hit basically on the top of my head. Also ir helps to do the whole thing upside down because then you can skip the brush and maintain your texture. just finger come it into the pony tail and roll it into the sock or whatever you are using before lifting your head back up. I think this keeps it from looking unkempt without requiring brushing or product.
