Makes sense. With territory rights, MLS already has rights to players within 75-100 miles of their club. Having 4 or 5 pay to play clubs in their territory doing the training and filtering allows them to spend less on their academy/scouting efforts. MLS academies don’t want their local pay to play clubs getting too much exposure to other academies in case another MLS team tries to get a player to move to a different their academy.[/quote]

Also the travel.  MLS teams cover travel costs for their players.  At pay-to-play clubs it falls on the parents.  DCU is traveling to Atlanta, NJ 2x, NYC, Orlando, PA 2x, and Toronto, just in the Fall.   The NY & NJ trips probably require hotel stays, and the Atlanta, Orlando, and Toronto trips will all require airfare + hotels.    That would be cost prohibitive for many/most families in SYC, Bethesda, Alexandria.   [/quote]
