Rain is forecast for Monday through Thursday of next week. Let's watch Smart Restart heads explode. If only we knew what would happen if kids were unmasked at school, like in an entire densely populated 1st world country?!? Oh yeah, we have one that doesn't mask kids at school at all, the UK: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/27/us/students-masks-classrooms-britain.html
Or like in South Carolina where an entire county just went virtual because they don’t mask and too many cases of Covid in elementary school.
An entire country's kids don't mask at school, but solely because 1 elementary school in SC didn't mask, COVID spread. LOL Great logic there. Even the CDC's own study of school COVID mitigation methods found no statistical difference between kids masking and not masking. That probably explains why an entire country's kids (plus many kids throughout the US and the world) don't mask at school and are fine. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7021e1.htm
The CDC article you link still found a 21% lower incidence of COVID in schools where kids wore masks. I’d take that! Plus, the study predates the Delta variant. Kids are now being infected and getting hospitalized at increased rates. They should all wear masks in school as masking is proven to reduce spread.
That was a statistically insignificant rate, meaning it could have been explained by chance alone. It's the same as if everyone wore purple shirts too. Even the leading COVID-cautious scientists (Michael Osterholm for one) are saying cloth masks are not effective, especially against delta. Speaking of which, delta is not more virulent, just more contagious. And we already know healthy kids have less risk with COVID than they do the flu. Do we require such things for the flu? No, we don't. 18 months in, there's tons of developmental and emotional costs of little kids wearing masks. I'd recommend the New York Magazine article by David Zweig last week (which I'm sure is what prompted the NYTimes to do an article on the UK). We don't require harmful treatments, especially on little children, that have never been done in history unless they are proven. The UK and Scandinavia prove every day that masks in school are not required. Parents should be able to choose what they want their kids to do. If you're more comfortable with your kids masking, then by all means mask them (and do it with a higher quality mask).
