I don't think you can equate that Slate article with criticism of the Santorums' mourning process.* I don't think that anyone should have anything to say about how someone responds to an unimaginable event or circumstance (within the bounds of morality, of course). The Slate article doesn't do that.

Correctly or not, the Slate article calls Santorum a hypocrite, not a weirdo or anything similar. Someone publicly supporting a policy - especially a candidate - is fairly subject to an examination of his past behavior for comparison.
