My guess is that KIPP is not represented because its specialty is teaching kids from disadvantaged backgrounds and those parents who are reading this are, by definition, providing their children with a more educated upbringing than those children who are the focal point of the KIPP model.
No, you're wrong. KIPP is nationally recognized as one of the best charters in the country. DCUM liberal readers fail to recognize the school as one of the best in the city because the school is populated by racial minorities.
I'm a liberal and the reason I'm not wanting KIPP or DC PREP for my white upper middle class kid is because I'm greedy and want as much time with my kid before he goes off to college and those schools keep the kids in school for way more hours than a typical school does. Plus, we can afford private school so maybe it is immoral to take a spot at DC Prep or KIPP that would otherwise go to a kid whose parents can't afford any alternative. On the other hand, when it comes time to tour middle schools, those schools will be on our list to consider and if it seems like a perfect fit for our kid, then, yeah, we will try to get in-- and meanwhile just hold my boy tight to me for as long he will let me.
