Your son is a 2028 who has never played on a lacrosse team. Definitely rec is the way to go. He will learn a lot about playing lacrosse on a team, stick skills, and lacrosse IQ. Others have mentioned that Bethesda Lacrosse Club has a rec program, so you might check it out. There is a big difference between what you pay to play on a rec team vs a club team. If Sundays are not good for your family, be sure to ask all teams when they play. Good luck!
I'm looking for other options because Bethesda plays on Sunday. I haven't gotten the name of any other programs, and when I google rec lacrosse in MD, I either get Bethesda or programs that end at 5th. I'm also questioning whether this is the sport long term for him, if there aren't options for families who don't want to commit to travel.
Will your son go to a MoCO public school? If so, generally speaking, there's a HS lacrosse option for him. If you plan on sending your kid to a WCAC school, you almost have to do club (and soon) for that. Not saying that's good or right, but the situation.
