In the 90’s, I lived at 18th and S, and I never went east of 16th Street. Then the neighborhood got “safe” and people started paying a fortune for row houses. How great is that “walk score” when you can’t safely go out after dark? Yup, that was absolutely the dividing line - "Dont go east of 16th St" Another long time downtown dweller here who very much remembers when it was not safe to go east of 16th and few risked walking through Meridian Hill/Malcolm X park in daytime. There also used to be a 17th & Euclid crew who made the streets around the area where Harris Teeter is now a “no go” zone because of the gun battles.
I lived near Dupont Circle in the late 80s and most of the 90s. I went past 16th Street all the time. I went to the New Vegas Lounge quite a bit (I'm surprised it hasn't been gentrified out by now). Also, the Black Cat. I had friends who lived on 13th who I hung out with. While lots of people were scared to cross 16th, I never found it all that bad. The makeover of Logan Circle is still amazing though.
