I can't or shouldn't speak for West or Whittier; I haven't had any experience there. However I can tell you that: 1. Truesdell has a new playground that is used by over 100 students in the evenings and on weekends, and is managed by the community. 2. Truesdell had the largest in-person population of students during the pandemic in Ward 4; to include middle and high schools. Students reported from 8:30am - 3:30pm, 4 days a week. 3. The Truesdell Family/Teacher Organization is strong and and has advocated for a sooner-than-later modernization that will include an infant and toddler daycare center. 4. Truesdell's high staff turnover is a result of the district converting the school from PK-8 to PK-5; so naturally as the middle grades are eliminated, staff must transition out. 5. Truesdell's former Principal was promoted to an Instructional Superintendent. The new principal has over 23 years of experience, has led other successful elementary schools and worked in the central offices of other districts. 6. The majority of Truesdell's staff transition is a result of promotions. 7. The Family Teacher Organization regularly schedules playdates after school hours. 8. The majority of students that transition from Truesdell enroll in high-quality schools. 9. This year Truesdell will host a free summer enrichment program from 9-5pm. 10. Truesdell is also the districts flagship and oldest partner with DC Scores. 11. Truesdell has an award winning world language program. 12. Truesdell was one of the first DC Keys school. 13. Truesdell has partnered with consultants to incorporate a project-based learning curriculum with consultants who have extensive experience working with Two Rivers PCS for next school year. 14. My child is looking forward to the extensive enrichment program that will be available next school year. 15. Truesdell has hired a new Community School Coordinator for next school year whose purpose will be to build partnerships with the community and external organizations. That individual actually lives in the community. 16. They have invested $50K into a new community garden and associated student enrichment; an initiative led by the Truesdell Family Teacher Organization. 17. Students speak AT LEAST 5 languages other than English at Truesdell. I hope these little unknown facts help enlighten you to what a great school Truesdell ES is.
Thank you so sincerely for taking the time to share this info. Sounds like a wonderful school and community!
