I’m a white person who grew up around there.

On the one hand, there are certainly jerks in both Missouri and Kansas, and I’m sure variations of the George Floyd story happen there.

But, on the other hand, I think the typical Republican there would be the “I don’t see race,” happy to vote for Tim Scott, awkwardly trying to stumble toward a better future Republican, not a “Proud to fly the Confederate flag, wish we could go back to the days of the plantations” Republican. So, a Black DMV-area kind of kid who could imagine going to UVA would probably be OK at KU.

Also: the KU mascot is named after people who were, effectively, terrorists against slaveholders, so, Kansas has a history of trying to be on the right side on race-related issues.
