There are help wanted signs everywhere in DC. Companies are going to need to pay a fair wage and offer good working conditions if they want staff. There's no other way around it.
Where I live (not DC) restaurants are unable to hire people due to low wages, so they’ve taken to posting on social media and posting signs *inside the restaurant itself* that government needs to abolish social services so people will be forced to work at $2.13 an hour. Not surprisingly, it’s hurt their business. Which is probably good, since they don’t have any waitstaff anyway.
Exactly. The problem isnt that their business cant stay afloat without paying people pennies its that people are relying on social services, which is funny considering a lot of servers I used to know were eligible for social services like Medicaid, WIC/SNAP, daycare vouchers, etc. Trust me taxpayers end up paying for the low wage jobs anyways.
Clearly you have not been a server. The low wage is because you work on tips. The hourly salary really is the taxes for the tips. You are taxed on total business sold. I made a ton of money in college waiting tables and that is when I realized I was a conservative-I wanted to manage my destiny. The issue is that if people are not going to restaurants you do not make any money. The hourly wage for a server is not the issue. Until people go back to eat in, please remember if you carry out to give the same tip you would if you ate in if you want to be kind. I still tip the same way because I know this life and it is a good one if everyone tips. It is not the government responsibility. The servers who are really really hurting are the ones at high end places who literally make more than a lot of people but they cannot survive if you don't eat there and not as many people are going to get take out at Capital Grille because you are paying for the experience and don't want a cold steak. If you are vaccinated, go out and have a good meal.
