They won't stop because they are too f&*$ing arrogant. They think that whatever they have to text or talk about is more important than common courtesy, safety, or human lives. What really pisses me off are the people driving fancy, expensive cars and talking on a hand held cell -- if you can afford that car you can afford some form of bluetooth!
Talking on the phone via a hands-free device is distracting too. There was a study showing the differences between the driver talking hands-free on the phone v. driver talking with a passenger in the car, and the former is a real distraction from driving compared to talking to a person who is physically present in the car with you. I almost never talk on the phone while driving, much less text or email. I know how dangerous it is and I don't presume that it's "just dangerous for everyone else but I'm one of those special people who can do it safely." I actually pull over and stop the car if I need to make a call. If I'm driving, I usually let it ring & then I pull over and return the call, or I just wait until I get where I was going and then return the call. My kids are elementary age and I know they are watching me in the car (and everywhere else). If they see me using my phone in the car, they are going to think it's ok. No matter how much I tell them it's not ok, if I model this behavior, they are going to think they can do it when they start driving. So, those of you who text and drive, think about what you are teaching your kids.
