Do what works best for you. Our older two kids' first birthday parties were huge; talking at a banquet room with about 200 people. Yes, it's a cultural thing and no, we didn't pay, or else wouldn't have bothered. Daughter turns one at the end of June and definitely having a backyard party for her but on a much smaller scale, about 50 guests, who are all four grandparents, aunts, uncles, first cousins from both sides (DH has 3 siblings and I have 5), and a couple close friends with their families. At this point, every adult who we've invited has been vaccinated but even before that, we've attended plenty of outdoor gatherings since last Summer with no issue, so I'm even less worried at this point.
The small version of my baby's birthday gets to 23 people with us, local grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and godparents + kids. Seriously ANY of these people would be insulted if they were not invited over to celebrate.
PP you're responding to. Same here. Both of our families are local so family gatherings are never truly "small." I'm just super grateful that we've all been on the same page as far as getting vaccinated and other Pandemic issues for the most part.
