Which sports are no cut or not overly competitive to join? I have a rising 9th grader who would like to participate in some type of HS sport but more for fun and social reasons. She is a reasonable tennis player and swimmer but definitely not varsity level. Are there intramural teams for tennis or swimming? If not, how competitive are the JV teams? She will be at Yorktown if that makes a difference. I understand cross country/track is no cut but she isn't really interested in either of those. Thanks.
It definitely makes a difference. Yorktown is far more competitive than W-L (don't know about Wakefield). For example, crew is a cut sport at YHS and not at W-L.
What do you mean by competitive? If you mean less students trying out and fewer or no cuts, then yes, it may be easier to make a team at W-L and Wakefield. However I'd say Yorktown and W-L's girls teams are just about on par competetively. W-L's girl's Varsity 8 crew team placed second at Nationals and won States two years ago, for example. The varsity boats from both schools are on par competitively. Other sports are similarly competitive. While Wakefield is in a weaker athletic conference, and does not often play W-L and Yorktown, the Wakefield gymnastics team won their district competition two years ago. So I'd say there are strong girls' teams at all three high schools.
I meant the first part -- YHS is more competitive for the student trying out for the team. I think it's because YHS is more cliquey.
W&L is 40% Hispanic, and some sports have different levels of turnout by demographic than others. I would love to see the stats on that but doubt they keep a record.
