"Varsity was probably mostly finalised before tryouts even started." "Correct. My experience with high school coaches is that they always lean to returning guys even if their level has stayed flat while others improved. Kids develop in the 2-3 years but first impressions are often what holds." Okay, but every year, a certain number of varsity spots open up as seniors graduate and other players leave for other reasons (injury, to focus on club/recruiting, other interests, etc.). Those spots have to be filled by former JV players or new players coming in (mostly freshmen). Why would a coach not select a JV player who has developed/improved to fill one of these spots? I can see some positions not having capacity (e.g., goalkeeper) but for field players, there would typically be opportunities to move up. Assuming your kid truly has improved, why would you assume he doesn't have a chance simply b/c he was a JV player prior? I do think fitness and speed are really important to most HS coaches, so if I'm a player who wants to make varsity my sophomore or junior year, why not show up at tryouts in the best shape of your life and then dazzle the coach with your improved soccer skills once he sees how fit you are? A lot of HS coaches are also club coaches. They're not always the old-school driver's ed/gym teacher who knows nothing about soccer.
