Chauvin will be convicted. There is a video of the entire crime.End of story.
Logic dictates, no? But logic goes out the window when it comes to cops on trial. The conviction rate for cops - the very few who ever get prosecuted - is very, very small. Our society is conditioned to be deferential to police authority. Even most people of color. I hope and pray that the combination of the video, the multiple witnesses, the shifting attitudes in our country - will guide this jury to do the right thing. That said, murder requires intent. The defense is trying to paint a picture of Chauvin distracted by the crowd - all of the cops distracted by the crowd - to make this is a negligent killing - voluntary manslaughter - rather than murder. This is why I think it is entirely likely that the jury will convict on the second degree manslaughter charge but not the two murder charges. And that result will cause a lot of frustration and anger in the larger community.
This seems like a risky approach for the defense. One witness testified that Chauvin looked very relaxed, with his hands in his pocket and all of his weight entirely on Floyd. Also, that he had a look of being cold/heartless and that he didn't care when they were pleading for him to get off and/or check his pulse. In the video, you can hear one bystander saying something about Chauvin enjoying this. Also, there were about 9 people on the scenes, a few of them minors, one even 8 years old. I don't know if it's reasonable to think the 4 officers felt intimidated or afraid. It was clearly not an unruly mob or crowd.
