We're at 5th grade at Janney and we're not applying to private. I'm sure that some of DC's friends are applying out, but none that I'm aware of. Some parents definitely keep applications on the down-low, but among our good friends who I'm fairly certain would tell us if they are applying out, all are headed to Deal. And as one of the prior posters mentions, only a fraction of kids get into "Top 3/5" schools, so if that's what parents are looking for or else they won't pay the $45k/year, most kids will be at Deal. Even if there is hybrid in the fall, most adults will be vaccinated and the kids will have far fewer restrictions placed on them. I'm not looking forward to DL next year, but I think we could survive a 2-3/week hybrid for another semester, if needed, because most likely all the extracurriculars will be back in full swing and kids won't be going crazy at home 24/7. If my kid can get to sleepaway camp for a normal summer, which it looks like will happen, that will buy us another few months of DL without going crazy.
My 5th grade Janney kid has 5 good friends and 5/6 (all but us) applied to private for 6th. These are all families who are committed to Deal (each has an older kid who attends or attended Deal) but they want in-person learning. We also have an older child at Deal.
I hope they know that there is absolutely no guarantee that the privates will be back this fall, at least 100%. We're at Sidwell and there has not been word one yet about plans for next year. Of course, renewal contracts are due soon, but still nothing said about the rest of this year, let alone next. From what I understand, that is pretty much the case across the board with DC privates, with the possible exception of the Cathedral schools that seem to be leading the way out of the DL rabbit hole.
This year, Sidwell has had more school for far more students (%) for longer than DCPS. I trust that Sidwell will offer more in-person than DCPS next year too.
