All commercially-sold raw fish sushi in the US has to be flash-frozen before sale, so there’s no problem there as the risk is in parasites that are killed by freezing. Just avoid eating too much tuna due to the mercury content. Raw shellfish is a bad idea, however, as the bacteria and viruses they can carry aren’t necessarily killed by freezing. This is why people who are immunocompromised (like chemo patients) are advised to avoid raw oysters etc. So pass on the raw clam, shrimp, and uni etc. Also, you’re much more likely to get sick from the rice if not promptly refrigerated. This, or listeria on the vegetables, might have been what sickened your friend and caused her to lose her pregnancy. Helpful guidance from the NHS here: https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/keeping-well/foods-to-avoid/
+1. Agree with all of this. Listen to this reply, OP.
OP here. I am 😀 My plan is to call my local sushi place this afternoon and ask them if their fish is flash frozen just to double check. If it is then I’m gonna get myself some sushi 😀 I knew about the raw shellfish but didn’t realize that shrimp fell in this category so I’ll keep that in mind.
