I like Canaan and Wisp for localish skiing. Better conditions than Liberty and Whitetail and much less crowded.
OP here. We just booked a house at deep creek in February and plan to ski at WISP. This will be our first time there.
We skied at Wisp for many years but it seems like they've struggled to get the mountain fully open the past few years. Hopefully they can get more of their slopes open by February. I don't know if they don't want to make snow or if they don't have the staff to work the lifts but they still haven't gotten the East Ridge Trails open and they just recently got some of the North Camp trails open. Lines have been long. Bring your own food and plan to use your car as a base (unless you are ski-in/ski-out). If your kids are intermediate skiers, a weekend will be long enough. I'm an intermediate skiier anywhere else but I ski the black slopes at Wisp (I don't think any of them are open right now). You'll enjoy it but its small and not much of a challenge for intermediate skiers. It does get icy so be prepared for that. Plan to bring your food. There isn't much out there, even for carry out. We just came back from Snowshoe today. We skied there on Friday and while conditions were good and the mountain was 100% open (except the glades), lines were too long and way too many people weren't wearing masks or weren't wearing them properly. The staff tried to tell people to put their masks on and many people just ignored them. We did go over to Silver Creek to ski on Saturday and enjoyed it more than we expected. Yes, it is smaller but we never waited in line for a lift, the slopes were in good condition, and there was a good variety of slopes. In the end I doubt we will go back to Snowshoe. The drive is a PIA and we'd rather drive a couple of extra hours to NY/New England. If we ski again in WV, we will go back to Timberline/Canaan now that Timberline has reopened.
