You have not failed. It sounds like he has rage. We went through this with a dog (another spaniel breed). Dog owners who haven’t experienced it don’t understand. It can’t be fixed or treated effectively. When this type of aggression happens with puppies there is no amount of behavioral modification/training that will fix him. BTDT. It’s bad breeding and he has a literal screw loose. They go from tail wagging happy to attack in a split second with no warning. If will happen again and next time it may be worse. It often gets worse as they get older. I am a dog lover and have owned many dogs. I do not say this lightly. Please listen to your vet and rehome him through a spaniel rescue or return him to the breeder. He is not safe to have around your children and please do not have any other children in your home until he is rehomed. https://www.petcarerx.com/article/what-is-rage-syndrome-in-dogs/1611
People who believe this nonsense don't deserve a dog. Get a fish.
I should have known I’d get flamed here. Be very thankful you’ve never experienced a dog like this. I am certain you don’t know me better than my vet of 25 years and the multiple trainers/behaviorist we tried. We tried everything including meds and it got worse. Maybe OP will have better luck but her own vet is concerned and she should know the reality if the dog has rage.
